When dealing with spills, do not over wet the area, take your time and be patient.
With liquids, blot up as much of the spill as possible - it is worth the effort.
With solids, scrape up any excess with a blunt knife.
Using diluted gentle detergent for wollen clothes (1 teaspoon per 1/2 pint warm water), work towards the middle of the spill dampening the mark and blotting with a clean towel. Do not rub.
Follow up with 1 teaspoon of household ammonia (NOT bleach!) in a cup of warm water, dampen and blot. Do not rub.
Finally dampen with 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water in a spray bottle, blot up excess, place white kitchen towels 8 deep over the area and weight down. Leave overnight.
Repeat if neccesary.
